Blissfield Presbyterian Church Organ Restoration Project |

The First Presbyterian Church of Blissfield was formally organized in February of 1829, at the home of Hervey Bliss. On February 22, 1829, the Reverend Alanson Darwin traveled through 14 miles of wilderness from Tecumseh to meet with the village founders, Nancy and Hervey Bliss and seven other neighboring pioneers to organize the church. It is the oldest church in the town of Blissfield, the first with a bell in its tower, one of the oldest in the county and was preceded by only four other Presbyterian churches in the state. To read more of our history, click here. In 1929, Blissfield Presbyterian celebrated its centennial. That is when our beloved Mohler pipe organ was installed and dedicated. Since that time it has been repaired several times. Recently, our Session (Ruling Elders) decided it was time to have major restoration done. The estimate for the restoration was over $11,000 and during the restoration, the cost increased to over $13,000. For a very small congregation that is a significant sum. We must borrow from an endowment fund to pay the bill. It is our intention to pay back this fund that was intended for future generations of Blissfield Presbyterians. We have had some contributions and pledges of contributions. One such pledge comes from the Al and Lillian Schaffer family of California, former members of Blissfield Presbyterian. Lillian sadly died in May of 2010, stricken with Amyliodosis. Lil was a member of the choir and soloist at our church and expressed a deep desire to see our organ restored. See www.aroadtoremember.info to learn more about the family's commitment to this project. If you would like to contribute to our organ's restoration, you can send your check to: Blissfield First Presbyterian
Church Note: If you desire the donation to
be a memorial to Lil Schaffer, please indicate that on the check. |
